BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Brevard Zoo took in a small juvenile hawksbill sea turtle, ‘Snacks’, stranded at Spessard Holland Park on July 18. Upon intake, Snacks was anemic, lethargic and had low glucose.
Despite this, Snacks had good body condition and began eating right away. So far, this little one’s favorite snack is krill.
Snacks was found with gooseneck barnacles, which tells us that they could have been out in the Sargassum before stranding or stranded with the Sargassum washing ashore.
These types of barnacles are commonly found on objects or animals that live pelagically (in the open ocean).
