The World’s Most Expensive Cars
By Space Coast Daily // July 15, 2021
Buying a car will always be expensive, but there is an enormous disparity between the kind of vehicles that you find in the used car market and the most expensive classic cars in the world. So, what are the most expensive cars in the world? Read on to discover a few of the vehicles that have cost the most (so far) and for some truly eye-watering sums.
1. Ferrari 250 GTO
In 2018, a Ferrari 250 GTO sold for a staggering £52 million, which made it the most expensive car ever sold on record. This was a private sale between German racing driver Christian Glaesel to US car parts mogul David Macneil with the model winning the Tour de France in the year after it was built and never crashing in its 55 years.
2. Ferrari 250 GTO
The 250 GTO also appears at second on the list at a sale price of £30,750,300. This model was sold at an auction and a model that was previously raced by French F1 driver Jo Schlesser.
3. Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti
It is yet another Ferrari that rounds out the top 3 with the 335 Sport Scaglietti fetching £28,801,940 at another auction in 2016, which made it the most expensive sports car ever bought at an auction at the time. The stunning model was owned by a collector for 40 years and had previously been raced by Peter Collins and Maurice Trintignant in 1957.
4. Mercedes-Benz W196
Breaking the pattern in fourth place is the Mercedes-Benz W196, which sold for £23,880,600 in 2013. This fantastic car won the German and Swiss Grand Prix in 1954 and was raced by Juan Manuel Fangio. At the time, it became the most expensive vehicle ever sold at an auction.
5. Ferrari 290 MM
As you might have guessed, it is Ferrari closing out the top 5 with the 290 MM selling for £22,630,100. Another one driven by Juan bel Fangio, there were only 4 ever produced with this model being built for the 1956 Mille Miglia.
Owning a Classic Car
While your typical classic car does not fetch quite this amount, you will still find that every classic is a serious investment and one that needs to be protected. This is why classic car owners must always take out classic car insurance, which will provide protection if anything were to happen to your prized possession and provide peace of mind.
It is truly amazing the prices that the world’s most expensive vehicles have sold for and it will be interesting to see if anyone breaks the record in the coming years and if it will again be for a Ferrari. These are some incredible vehicles that also have a rich history which can add a great deal to their price-tag.
