BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Steven Edward Erlanger, age 64, passed away Monday, November 22, 2021, at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.
Born March 28, 1957, in Springfield, Ohio, Steve was the son of Fred E. and Robby Mae Erlanger.
Steve, who was the General Manager of Space Coast Daily, was no stranger to Brevard County or to the media business as he spent more than 35 years launching community newspapers or reviving newspapers around the country.
Steve and his wife Elaine are originally from Ohio and have lived in Florida for the past 21 years. Prior to this extended stay in Florida, he lived in Texas, California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Colorado, with several moves within each of those states.
“Steve was one of the most prolific and experienced community newspaper executives in the country, having started more than 45 community newspapers from coast to coast, including seven editions of the original Hometown News on the Space Coast,” said Tom Palermo, president and publisher of Maverick Multimedia, Inc., the parent company of Space Coast Daily.
“Steve was a pure professional, and his deep knowledge of the media and print industry, and his always upbeat positive can-do attitude will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure to interact with him – including his Space Coast Daily family and his many, many clients.
“Steve was totally dedicated to providing Space Coast residents with quality local news and also supporting the philanthropic community in Brevard County,” said Palermo.
He was preceded in death by his father in December 2010 and his son, Steven Austin Erlanger, in July 2011. Steve is survived by his mother, his wife Kay Elaine Erlanger, and two sons Matthew Erlanger and Michael Whip.
“I am very thankful for having known Steve for over 25 years,” said Giles Malone, partner with Space Coast Daily. “Steve was a very kind, thoughtful person who took great pride in his profession. Steve will be greatly missed.”
A Gathering will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mollyshouse.org, where Steve had previously served on their board.
