Georgia earned its first national championship since 1980 in January 2022, defeating No. 1 Alabama 33-18 in Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium. When senior redshirt quarterback Stetson Bennett IV went 17-of-26 for 224 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions as the game’s offensive player of the game, he earned the honour.

While accepting Georgia’s championship trophy at the trophy presentation, Bennett, who had just battled tears on the sidelines in the last minute before Georgia’s triumph was achieved, performed the same thing he had done throughout the season. To everyone else, he shared the love.

With seven tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup, junior safety Lewis Cine was named the game’s Defensive Player of the Game. A Georgia defence stopped Alabama to 30 running yards on 28 attempts, sacked Bryce Young four times, intercepted two passes, made eight tackles for loss, and reduced the Crimson Tide to 4.7 yards per play.

The Moment it Happened

Kelee Ringo made a game-changing interception with 54 seconds remaining in the game for Georgia. Bryce Young, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback for Alabama, tossed the ball toward Ringo. Ringo scored a 79-yard touchdown on the return of the ball. Georgia was named winners after the longest pick-six in championship game history.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett, a former walk-on, broke down in tears after seeing this play. There were others with watery eyes, too. After the game, Coach Kirby Smart embraced 89-year-old Vince Dooley, the only Georgia coach to win a national championship before Smart.
