BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Space Coast Daily is sharing a new series called Health First Medical Minute, as Brevard’s largest health care provider continues to highlight and address important health concerns in our community. In this episode, Health First Otolaryngology James P. Lacey, MD, shares important information about the Inspire Sleep Apnea Device.
This FDA-approved implantable upper airway stimulation device functions like a pacemaker and stabilizes a patient’s throat during sleep in order to prevent obstruction. The device consists of three components: a programmable neuro-stimulator located in a chest pocket, a pressure sensing lead that detects a patient’s breathing, and a stimulator lead that delivers mild stimulation to the tongue nerve.
The stimulator is controlled via the patient’s handheld remote control. Patients turn on the device before going to bed to gently stimulate the throat muscles while sleeping.
Dr. Lacey focuses on the care and management of diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid and sinuses, with an interest in pediatric ENT care, especially sleep-disordered breathing. He came to Brevard from Enloe Hospital in Chico, California.
