POLICE: 26-year-old officer was hit in the chest that struck a bulletproof vest
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — A Melbourne police officer was shot at the Suburban Extended Stay hotel at 1125 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on Friday evening.
Melbourne Police Chief David Gillespie said during a press conference that officers were called to the hotel for a well-being check around 5 p.m. and spoke to a suspect who had barricaded himself inside a room.
“The subject fired through the door toward law enforcement,” said Gillespie, who went on to say the 26-year-old officer was hit in the chest that struck a bulletproof vest.
Gillespie said two officers returned fire, but there were no other injuries.
According to a Melbourne police spokesperson, the yet-to-be-identified officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
The suspect was taken into custody by officers.
