BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College women’s golf team will compete in the 19th annual Flagler Fall Slam beginning Monday.
The Titans have finished in the top three in the first two tournaments of the fall season and head into the Flagler event No. 4 in the NJCAA national poll.
“A really good tournament, Flagler always runs a good tournament. It is our best tournament of the fall as far as field, venue and they feed you well. It is a really good tournament,” Eastern Florida State College women’s golf coach Jamie Howell said.
“Daytona State will be there and they are No. 1 in the nation for us so a couple of junior colleges in a field full of good Division II teams with a couple of Division I teams.”
The tournament will be played at the Marsh Creek Country Club in St. Augustine and the Titans are looking to continue playing well. In Sebring, freshman Sarah Knitter finished fourth overall while Savannah Hawthorne finished sixth overall.
“I see glimpses – I see times when we can do this, we just have too many unforced errors and aren’t capitalizing on some opportunities. It is a part of the maturation of any golfer or any golf team, you have to go through hard times to get to the good times and I think we are right on the edge of being where we can be, but at the same time it seems like it is pretty far out,” Howell said.
“We keep getting a little bit better, we are deeper this year. We played in a different place and we shoot 309, 312, 307, and I think if you ask the ladies that is the highest we could have shot, we didn’t shoot as well as we could have so yeah, it is there we just have to keep working.”
The two-day tournament is part of a busy week as the Titans will play Seminole State College on Friday.
