Health First Medical Minute highlights important health concerns in Brevard County community

WATCH: Space Coast Daily is sharing a new series called Health First Medical Minute, as Brevard’s largest health care provider continues to highlight and address important health concerns in our community. In this episode, Jaime Tavarez, MD, board-certified in Internal Medicine, discusses the importance of being aware of carbon monoxide poisoning, especially after severe weather events like Hurricane Ian that cause power outages and lead to increased use of generators.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Space Coast Daily is sharing a new series called Health First Medical Minute, as Brevard’s largest health care provider continues to highlight and address important health concerns in our community.

In this episode, Jaime Tavarez, MD, board-certified in Internal Medicine, discusses the importance of being aware of carbon monoxide poisoning, especially after severe weather events like Hurricane Ian that cause power outages and lead to an increased use of generators.

Dr. Tavarez said carbon monoxide builds up in your bloodstream. When too much carbon monoxide is in the air, your body replaces the oxygen in your red blood cells with carbon monoxide. This can lead to serious tissue damage or even death.

Dr. Tavarez is a member of the Health First Medical Group, serving patients at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center.

He earned his medical degree from Universidad of Autonoma de Guadalajara. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Saint Vincent Medical Center in New York City.

Following completion of his residency, Dr. Tavarez served as the Teaching Attending Physician at New York Downtown Hospital. He also served as Associate Professor in Medicine with Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Tavarez focuses his practice on wellness and preventive medicine. He cares for adults, with a focus on the elderly. He specializes in the management of chronic medical problems, such as hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, thyroid, renal disease, COPD, arthritis and osteoporosis.

Dr. Tavarez has been recognized for delivery of quality care by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. He was named among the Top Ten Internal Medicine Doctors (2012) in New York City.

Dr. Tavarez is married and has two daughters. He enjoys surfing and snowboarding.
