BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – The Launch Pad Sports Complex in Cocoa is hosting the 2022 Lou Palmer Memorial Florida World Championship Series November 10-13 at the newly-renovated facility located at I-95 and State Road 520.
Josh Borne, the managing partner of the 65-acre Launch Pad Sports Complex on Florida’s Space Coast, explained the new direction of the facility and plans for the future.
The Launch Pad Sports Complex was formerly the Cocoa Expo and is located at the intersection of I-95 and State Road 520 in Cocoa, and now offers everything from sports tournaments to instructional camps to overnight stays to a wide variety of services.
The Launch Pad Sports Comple was originally built in 1964 as the spring training home of the Houston Colt 45s, later renamed the Houston Astros.
The Astros played their spring training games in the original stadium from 1964 to 1985. Rick Stottler purchased the property and renamed the facility Cocoa Expo, and for the next 25 years, hosted hundreds of NCAA, high school and youth tournaments in baseball, soccer, lacrosse, football, basketball, volleyball and more.
The center again hosted Major League Baseball in the spring of 1993 when the Florida Marlins played their inaugural spring training season games in Cocoa Stadium. In addition to Major League Baseball, the complex has been home to the Joe Brinkman Umpire School, Clint Hurdle’s Big League Experience Camp, youth baseball, soccer, basketball and volleyball tournaments and is the home field for the Cocoa Expos professional women’s soccer team.
Once again, Launch Pad Sports Complex has been one of the nation’s most popular high school and college spring training destinations.
“In the Summer of 2012, with a great deal and support from private investors, the complex got a major renovation of the entire complex that put in the amazing 4,700-seat professional stadium,” said Borne.
“This renovation also updated all the fields and facilities to make it one of the premier sports destinations in the country again. Despite its glorious past, the Launch Pad Sports Complex’s finest days are still ahead. We are primed and ready, so come join us and take this opportunity to play at one of the most historic sports complexes in the country, offering players the ability to create new experiences with teammates at games, tournaments, and events.”
