West Melbourne City Council Member Diana Adams, 29, Now Youngest Elected Official Currently Serving in Brevard County

As a first-time candidate, earned 7,169 votes representing 33.06% of the vote

BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Diana Adams, 29, was elected to the West Melbourne City Council on Nov. 8, making her the youngest elected official currently serving in Brevard County, as well as the youngest Councilmember in the history of the city.

As a first-time candidate, Adams earned 7,169 votes representing 33.06% of the total votes cast for the City Council race on Nov. 8. The West Melbourne City Council runs an at-large race where residents make select up to three candidates on their ballot, and the candidates with the top three most votes secure a seat for a four-year term.

Incumbents Andrea Young (5,482 votes) and John Dittmore (5,171 votes) were also elected for another term, while William Johnson (3,866 votes) did not receive enough votes for a seat.

Adams brings a history of public service and a unique perspective to the City Council, where she has served as a Councilwoman after being appointed in June of this year to fill the seat vacated by Daniel Batcheldor as he was moving out of state and not able to complete his term.

After graduating from Pennsylvania State University as a Schreyer Honors Scholar, Adams moved to Florida, where she taught for seven years and earned distinctions such as Brevard Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year.

She transitioned from teaching to pursue a Doctorate in Public Administration and currently serves as Executive Director for Brevard Heart Foundation and co-owns Rock Paper Simple, a small business, with her husband, Joshua.

She has served the West Melbourne community through volunteer opportunities, including the Parks & Recreation, Business, and Library advisory boards, as well as the Space Coast Field of Dreams board.

Along with working with the other six Councilmembers to set policy for the city, Adams plans to focus on the infrastructure needs of the city, ensuring fiscal responsibility and improving outreach and communication with residents and local businesses.

“West Melbourne is truly a gem within Brevard County, and I believe it is going to take all of us working together to make it the city we want it to be for not only our current community but also the future generations.”

Adams attributes her dedication and drive to her mother, who raised three children as a single mom and was a teacher for many years before retiring due to a brain tumor.

“Growing up, my mom taught us that if you put forth your best effort and a positive attitude, you can overcome obstacles and make a difference in so many lives – and that’s what I want to do, make a difference.”
