Can you describe your career path in cyber-technology and what led you to this field?

I spent 14 years in telecommunications, starting as the head of the department at the Telecommunication Services of Trinidad and Tobago, eventually becoming the Executive Vice President of Mobile Services in 2012 and then Chief Executive Officer in 2014, a position I held until September 2020. My strategic direction for the company heavily included digital transformation, which inherently increases cyber risk, making cybersecurity a key focus. After leaving in 2020, I and my business partners founded Precision Cyber, where I am the managing director.

What inspired you to pursue a career in cyber-technology?

After leaving TSTT, the importance of cyber technology and cybersecurity was clear, especially with digital transformation accelerating the adoption of digital technologies. COVID-19 further pushed this acceleration, highlighting cybersecurity as an excellent opportunity for business and technology.

What specific skills are essential for success in the cyber-technology industry?

Success in cyber technology requires a broad set of skills, including trustworthiness, technological proficiency, extensive experience, community involvement, and a comprehensive support infrastructure. Trust is paramount as companies entrust us with their core IT infrastructure.

How do you stay updated with the rapidly evolving technology in your field?

We stay updated through various means, including participation in forums, attending conferences like Blackhat and DEFCON, and holding regular meetings with alliance partners and the intelligence community.

Can you share a particularly challenging project you worked on and how you overcame the challenges?

The International Development Bank hired us to assess a ransomware attack on a government’s legal infrastructure. Through robust program management, activating our global network, and bringing in top-rated consultants, we successfully resolved the issue, making the agency one of the most secure in the region.

What are the most significant challenges facing the cyber-technology industry today?

Significant challenges include the increasing sophistication of cyber-attacks, especially with AI, the expanded attack surface due to IoT, OT devices, mobile use, third-party vulnerabilities, and a general lack of awareness about cyber threats.

How do you see the role of artificial intelligence evolving in cyber-technology?

AI has significantly changed the cybersecurity landscape, moving from traditional defense methods to predictive analysis, anomaly detection, and advanced threat detection, making it a primary driver behind cyber defense strategies.

What ethical considerations do you think are most important in cyber-technology?

Ethical considerations include transparency, accountability, professionalism, data minimization, informed consent, responsible disclosure, and continuous learning to ensure we responsibly secure clients’ critical infrastructure.

Can you discuss any emerging technologies that will significantly impact the industry?

Emerging technologies like quantum computing, further developments in AI, and blockchain technology are expected to impact the industry significantly, necessitating a reevaluation of current network architectures.

How does your work in cyber-technology contribute to broader societal issues?

Through Precision Cyber Technologies, we are deploying a Caribbean cyber fusion center to provide cybersecurity services to SMEs and large governmental organizations, addressing the skill and resource gap and protecting against cyber criminals.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in cyber-technology?

Ensure proper certification and training, immerse yourself in the field, uphold standards of professionalism and accountability, and align with organizations that share your personal goals.

How do you balance technical expertise with creativity in your work?

My technology and financial management background allows me to marry technical expertise with creative problem-solving. Each deployment is unique, requiring a blend of foundational knowledge and creativity.

Cybersecurity is evolving in response to changes in work models, including remote work and the use of mobile devices, necessitating robust data privacy and cybersecurity measures.

The shift from antivirus solutions to endpoint detection and response, and then to extended detection and response incorporating AI, exemplifies the need for nimbleness in adapting to technological advancements.

Common misconceptions include cybersecurity being solely an IT concern, underestimating the organized nature of cyber criminals, and overreliance on single solutions for protection. It encompasses much more, including policies, training, and processes.
