Roulette, a timeless casino game, has been a gaming staple for decades. Originating in 18th-century France, this iconic game involves a spinning wheel, a small ball, and more.

Plus, it could help you decide whether you prefer this table game, or whether you want to try others like Blackjack.
No matter what type of online Roulette game you decide to play, whether it be live Roulette or French Roulette, read on to find out more about how to play Roulette…
The Roulette wheel and table
The Roulette table is divided into two main sections – the inside and the outside.
The inside area features the numbers 0 to 36 (and 00 in American Roulette), while the outside area offers broader options such as red or black, odd or even, and various groups of numbers.
The heart of Roulette is the wheel, which in European Roulette has 37 pockets numbered 1 to 36, plus a single zero. In American Roulette, there are 38 pockets, including a double zero. The numbers are alternately coloured red and black, with the zeros coloured green.
The Roulette table features a layout where players wager. This layout corresponds to the numbers on the wheel and includes additional betting options like odd/even, red/black, and various groups of numbers.
Let’s take a further look at the types of bets involved in a Roulette game…
Types of bets
Inside bets:
- Straight up: Bet on a single number.
- Split bet: Bet on two adjacent numbers.
- Street bet: Bet on three numbers in a row.
- Corner bet: Bet on four numbers that form a square.
- Six-line bet: Bet on two adjacent rows (six numbers).
Outside bets:
- Red or black: Bet on the ball landing on a red or black number.
- Odd or even: Bet on the ball landing on an odd or even number.
- Low or high: Bet on numbers 1-18 (low) or 19-36 (high).
- Dozens: Bet on groups of 12 numbers (1-12, 13-24, 25-36).
- Columns: Bet on one of the three vertical columns of 12 numbers.
The gameplay
Predict: Players will begin by making random predictions on the numbers or sections of the table.
Spinning the wheel: The dealer spins the wheel in one direction and rolls the ball in the opposite direction. You’ll see the ball bounce around and eventually settle in a numbered pocket.
The outcome: The number and the colour that the ball spins onto is announced, and the dealer places a marker on it to make it clear.
In some online European Roulette games, a dealer isn’t present, and instead, the game will be randomly computer-generated.
However, the game is still completely fair. Plus, it’s important to remember that the wheel spinning is completely random and no one – including the dealer – knows where the ball will land in this chance-based game…
