BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – A U.S. Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral boat crew rescued five people aboard a disabled vessel 23 miles offshore at Port Canaveral.
The crew aboard the Smells Like Fish, a 36-foot center console, activated their emergency position indicating radio beacon after their vessel became disabled, including their onboard communications equipment.
The boat crew safely towed the vessel to Jetty Park where it was trailed.
“Having a properly registered EPIRB can greatly reduce the time it takes our rescue crews to locate you during an emergency, as demonstrated in this case,” said Chief Warrant Officer Alfredo Rivera, command duty officer, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville.
“We recommend all boaters equip their vessels with life-saving equipment, especially during the summer when conditions can change rapidly.”

Last December, U.S. Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 21,000-square-foot multi-mission facility.
The facility provides improved operational capabilities for Coast Guard personnel. The facility includes berthing, dining, a training room, workshops, a boat bay, and a fitness room.
MSU Port Canaveral personnel carry out port security, marine safety, search and rescue, and waterways management missions, along with environmental response and disaster assistance operations.
They are responsible for 857 miles of navigable waterways throughout central Florida and its east coast.
Station Port Canaveral’s missions include search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, boating safety, and security.
Their area of responsibility includes over 57 miles offshore including north of Haulover Canal, south to Malabar, the Indian River, and Banana River.
