Shane Whitsett Named Eau Gallie Commodores Boy’s Head Basketball Coach

Merritt Island High School graduate brings 12 years of head coaching experience
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Eau Gallie High School named Shane Whitsett the boy’s head basketball coach on Thursday.
“Being named the head coach at Eau Gallie means the world to me, and I’m just very grateful for the opportunity that Coach Oas and Principal Barton have given me,” Whitsett told Space Coast Daily.
“Eau Gallie is in my home county, so coming back to Brevard is exciting. My number one goal and something that I pride myself on is helping my kids get to the next level.”
Coach Whitsett is a Merritt Island High School graduate and the first stop of his coaching career. He was most recently the head coach at Vero Beach where he finished with six winning seasons, a record of 113-65, and a pair of district titles.
Before his tenure at Vero Beach, Whitsett added state champion to his resume and was named Florida Dairy Farmers Boys Basketball Coach of the Year for the 2015-16 season.
“So if the players have the desire to play college ball, I will do my best to get them there. But the players have to understand what they do in their free time will determine how good they become and if college ball is an option or not. It’s not easy to become great, it takes a lot of time and effort and that’s what we plan on doing,” said Whitsett.
