===================

After a very courageous three year battle with cancer, son, father, friend, educator and Melbourne girls head basketball coach Colin Turey passed away today at the age of 47.
Turey was a great friend to many off and of course on the basketball courts but if you knew him off the basketball court then you got to know a man that cared about you, the student-athletes he coached, the students he taught and he was always available to listen and help in any way he could.
Colin was an old school type of coach who believed in teaching and mentoring the modern ways of the ever changing game he loved so very much. He was a tremendous advocate for girls basketball and did whatever he could to promote the sport.
He loved attending the NCAA women’s basketball Final Four coaching clinics and seminars and was at the Women’s Final Four last April.
His head coaching career spanned 13 years with 11 of them at Heritage and two of them at Melbourne where he was blessed to coach his pride and joy, his daughter Kennedy.
He picked up his 200th career win last season on January 8 against Cocoa Beach and would end up with 202 coaching wins in 13 seasons as a head coach which is an impressive average of 15 wins per season.
At Heritage, Turey was 191-115 with a 624 winning percentage and his teams averaged 17 wins per season.
Turey was been named the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) Coach of the Year three times and was the CCC coach of the year in 2019. He captured the Florida Today Girl’s Coach of the Year following the 2011- 12 season.
His Lady Panthers were district champions four times (2013, 2017, 2018, 2019) and CCC Champs in 2019
Heritage only missed the playoffs two times in 11 seasons. Six times Heritage won 17 or more games and in three of those seasons won 20 or more games.
Simply put, he was an excellent basketball coach but he was a better friend to those that knew him.
