BREVARD COUNTY • ROCKLEDGE, FLORIDA—Brevard Fire Rescue Engines 80, 47, 48, Haz Mat 1, Fire 4, and Districts 45 and 40 responded to the Puzzle Box Academy on U.S. 1 in Rockledge on Tuesday to extinguish a hybrid electric vehicle fire that was beginning to spread to the structure.
According to a BCFR spokesperson, the fire extended into the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery pack, resulting in a thermal runaway of the batteries.
Crews actively cooled the battery pack to prevent any re-ignition. No injuries were reported.
According to a Puzzle Box Academy spokesperson, the building sustained minor damage to the soffit.
“The building was evacuated while firefighters doused the burning car, and students were able to return to regular classes later in the day,” said the Puzzle Box Academy spokesperson.
