BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – The Friday Night Locker Room’s Orville Susong and Steve Wilson are at Port Canaveral to provide a live Hurricane Milton report with Port Canaveral Director of Safety and Security Cory Dibble. 

On Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP) has set Port Condition “YANKEE” for Port Canaveral: Sustained gale force winds are predicted within 24 hours ahead of Hurricane Milton.

Port Canaveral is open and conducting limited Port operations and preparing for the closure of waterside and vessel shoreside Port operations. Vessels seeking to depart must arrange immediate departure. Cargo operations must cease with 18 kilometre per hour winds. Transfer hoses must be disconnected with 22 kph winds. Ships seeking to arrive in port should seek an alternate destination.

Jetty Park is closed until further notice.

HURRICANE MILTON UPDATE: Free Sandbag Distribution on the Space Coast Open Today 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard uses specific terms on understanding the port conditions based on the weather characteristics. The terms used help ship operators know how to respond to a tropical weather.

1. Whiskey: Set when gale force winds are expected to arrive at the port within 72 hours. Port remains open to all commercial traffic, but oceangoing ships and barges must report their intention to remain in port or depart. If they are departing, they must do so within 12 hours of gale-force winds.

2. X-Ray: Gale force winds are expected within 48 hours. The rules are similar to port condition Whiskey.

3. Yankee: Gale force winds predicted within 24 hours. Vessels seeking to depart must arrange immediate departure. Cargo operations must cease with 18 kilometre per hour (kph) winds. Transfer hoses must be disconnected with 22 kph winds. Ships seeking to arrive in port should seek an alternate destination.

4. Zulu: Gale force winds within 12 hours. The port is closed.

Sandbag Sites open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8:

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – In anticipation of the potential impacts from Hurricane Milton, Brevard County will offer free sandbags for residents beginning 8 a.m. Tuesday.

■ Chain of Lakes Park, 2300 Truman Scarborough Way, Titusville, FL 32796.
■ Mitch Ellington Park, 577 Hall Road, Merritt Island, FL, 32953. Enter from West Hall Road.
■ Wickham Park, 2500 Parkway Dr., Melbourne, FL 32935. Enter using south access from Parkway Dr.
■ Eastern Florida State College-Palm Bay Campus, 250 Community College Parkway SE Palm Bay, 32909

Sand is being provided by Brevard County Public Works and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will have supervised inmate work crews filling and loading sandbags for residents.

Residents do not need to bring sandbags, bags are provided and filled by on-site personnel. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per vehicle. Please be aware, lines may be closed earlier than 6 p.m. to ensure a timely closure.
