WASHINGTON D.C. – Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated on Friday that the federal government lacks the authority to shoot down drones and suggested that many reported drone sightings may actually be cases of mistaken identity.

In an interview on CNN, Mayorkas addressed concerns about the recent spate of drone sightings across multiple states. When asked by host Wolf Blitzer why federal authorities have not taken action to bring down these drones, Mayorkas explained the limitations of current laws.

“Our authorities are very limited,” he said, referencing the specific missions of various federal agencies involving unmanned aircraft. “Each agency’s jurisdiction is tied to its mission, and we cannot simply shoot a drone out of the sky.”

Mayorkas added that many of the reported sightings might not involve drones at all, but rather small aircraft that people are misidentifying. He pointed out that some drones are inexpensive and widely available, even at convenience stores.

“We are aware of no threats or malicious activity associated with these sightings,” he assured.

However, Mayorkas emphasized the need for expanded authority to address drone activity, revealing that officials have requested Congress to grant local and state authorities greater power to counter such incidents.

“Those authorities need to be broadened,” he said.

Earlier that evening, President-elect Donald Trump called on the Biden administration to provide answers about the drone sightings or take decisive action to eliminate them.
