Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition Outlines Causes of Lagoon Pollution
By Space Coast Daily // December 21, 2024
The number 1 cause of pollution is Muck Flux
BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA – The Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition is a leading, independent advocate for a healthy Lagoon, and detailed pollution of the Indian Lagoon in Brevard County comes from many sources.
The non-profit, non-partisan coalition brings together organizations, businesses, and individuals who share the goal of supporting the restoration of the Lagoon.
Healing Our Lagoon requires controlling each of these sources. That is precisely what the Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL) Plan does with the ½¢ tax collection.
■ The Number one cause of pollution in the Indian River Lagoon is Muck Flux, the black goo buildup from 70 years of buildup on the Lagoon floor releasing pollution.
■ The Number two causes are baseflow, pollution from septic systems, reclaimed water, and leaky sewer pipes seeping through our sandy soil to the lagoon.
■ The Number three cause is stormwater runoff, rain sweeping pollution off our land into the Lagoon.
■ The Number four cause is atmospheric deposition: pollution depositing out of the air.
■ The Number 5 cause is sewage plants. These are minor contributors now but the dominant source of pollution before 1996.
