Matthew H. Fleeger: The Alumnus Powering SMU Athletics Into the Future
By Space Coast Daily // December 12, 2024

You can take the boy out of Southern Methodist University, but you can’t take the SMU out of the boy. Matthew H. Fleeger may have graduated in 1987, but his beloved Mustangs remain near and dear to his heart.
And now, SMU has experienced a game-changing boost to its athletic program thanks to the remarkable generosity of alumnus Fleeger and his wife, Candee Richmond Fleeger. Funded in part through their Fleeger Family Foundation, the couple contributed an extraordinary $2 million, marking a key milestone in SMU’s Atlantic Coast Conference Competitiveness Campaign. Initially targeting $125 million to enhance athletic facilities and resources, this campaign soared past expectations, ultimately raising $159 million.
“I’m thrilled with the future direction of SMU Athletics,” Fleeger said. “It’s never been a better time to be a Mustang, and I’m proud to support our transition to the ACC.”
Fleeger’s financial support underscores his dedication to empowering SMU’s athletic programs. Of their $2 million donation, $1.2 million was allocated to the Weber End Zone Complex, an integral facility for Mustang football, while $800,000 bridged the campaign’s final funding gap. These targeted contributions demonstrate Fleeger’s strategic vision for creating lasting benefits for SMU’s student-athletes as they step into the ACC.
Fleeger’s enduring commitment to the university exemplifies the vital role of alums in driving institutional progress. By supporting SMU’s historic transition to the ACC, Fleeger has enhanced its athletic future and strengthened its competitive standing among collegiate powerhouses.
Philanthropy on the Field — and Off
Matthew Fleeger’s generosity extends beyond SMU. As the president and CEO of Gulf Coast Western, a leading oil and gas company, Fleeger has leveraged his success to support meaningful causes. His partnership with the Sadie Keller Foundation, which aids children battling cancer, highlights his compassionate approach to philanthropy. Having personally faced cancer, Fleeger channels his own experiences into creating a positive impact for others. Gulf Coast Western’s $25,000 contribution to the foundation and its ongoing sponsorship of annual galas reflect Fleeger’s deep commitment to community well-being, including his alma mater.
With the ACC Competitiveness Campaign exceeding its goals, SMU Athletics is entering a new era of opportunity. The funds raised will significantly enhance facilities and resources, allowing SMU to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with elite programs. Coming off a year in which SMU Athletics claimed eight championships, the university is poised for sustained success, supported by record-breaking season ticket sales at Ford Stadium.
The Fleeger Family Foundation’s support has helped lay the groundwork for SMU’s promising future in the ACC, ensuring that student-athletes have the tools and resources to achieve excellence both on and off the field.
The Enduring Legacy of Matthew H. Fleeger
Matthew H. Fleeger’s contributions to SMU reflect a deep commitment to fostering success and opportunity. His leadership, both in the business world and in philanthropy, is a testament to the profound impact alums can have on their communities and institutions. As SMU enters its next chapter in the ACC, the legacy of support from alumni like Fleeger will undoubtedly continue to shape its success.
“We are deeply grateful to Matt Fleeger and the Fleeger Family Foundation for their extraordinary generosity,” said Rick Hart, the athletic director at SMU. “Their commitment not only propels us to our campaign goal, but also significantly enhances our facilities and resources, positioning SMU Athletics for sustained success in the ACC.”
