BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA –Topgolf is proposing to build a $28 million golf and entertainment center in Viera, which is expected to create around 200 jobs—pending approval of zoning changes by the Brevard County Commission.
Topgolf is a sports entertainment complex that offers a high-tech golf game, food and drinks, and other activities:
■ Golf game: Players hit golf balls with microchips embedded at giant targets, and the Toptracer technology tracks the balls to provide real-time feedback and scoring.
■ Food and drinks: Topgolf offers a menu of food and drinks.
■ Other activities: Topgolf has other activities, including various games for all skill levels.
■ Music: Topgolf has loud music.
■ All-weather hitting bays: Topgolf has hitting bays suitable for all weather conditions.
■ Catering: Topgolf offers catering packages for birthday parties, company events, fundraisers, and social get-togethers.
Topgolf has locations in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Mexico, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates.

The planned Viera facility will feature a two-story venue with 64 hitting bays, outdoor patios, a restaurant and bar, and event spaces for parties and other gatherings.
Located on an 11.67-acre undeveloped site owned by The Viera Co., the center will be situated east of The Avenue Viera’s AMC movie theater and west of Interstate 95, adjacent to the north end of Bromley Drive and east of Lake Andrew Drive.
The county’s Planning and Zoning Board has already granted a conditional-use permit for the project.
The board also approved waivers for lighting the hitting bays and installing netting up to 165 feet high to contain golf balls within the facility’s driving range area. Topgolf must ensure its lighting does not interfere with drivers on I-95.
The Brevard County Commission will review the zoning requests for final approval.
The Viera Topgolf Center is estimated to attract 200,000 visitors annually. It is slated to operate from 9 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

How much does Topgolf cost? Each bay is priced by the hour, with the hourly rate varying by day and time, plus a $5 one-time member fee for new players. Up to 6 players can be in a bay and play. For safety reasons, only one person can hit at one time.
How does it work? Once you settle into your all-weather bay, a Bayhost will help you set up your game and create profiles for each player. The fun part is deciding which of the more than a dozen games to play first.
There are multiple Topgolf game variations; the micro-chipped golf balls score themselves, providing players instant feedback on each shot’s accuracy and distance:
■ Topgolf – Players aim for 11 giant dartboard-like targets. The further the shot goes and the closer to the pin, the more points the player receives.
■ TopChip – Use just the red target (5 shots), yellow target (5 shots), and green target (10 shots). Hit the correct target to earn points, but hit the wrong one, and points will be deducted.
■ TopShot – Similar to TopChip. Players must hit targets at four consecutive distances (5 shots each). Whichever starting target you choose (red, yellow, green, or brown) determines the game level of difficulty,
■ TopPressure – An accuracy game in which players must hit all nine sections within the yellow target. Move on to the second and third level to see the value of points multiply, hit the same section twice on level 2 and 3 and points will be deducted.
■ Angry Birds – Angry Birds, players aim the ball to hit the Angry Birds Level on screen. This game is only available at Toptracer Locations.
