BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Cameron Taylor Michaels, 25, of Merritt Island, is facing legal trouble after a crash during the Merritt Island Christmas Boat Parade on Saturday, Dec. 7, left three people injured.
According to court records, authorities have charged Michaels with reckless operation of a vessel and speeding in a manatee zone following the incident. The crash, which happened during the annual holiday event on Sykes Creek, involved Michaels’ red, sports-car-style boat and another vessel.
Michaels has entered a plea of not guilty and missed a scheduled court appearance Monday before Brevard County Judge Kelly Ingram. Michaels and his attorney, Sean Harnage, have declined to comment.
The much beloved annual holiday parade, known for its dazzling display of boats of all types decorated with holiday lights, took a dangerous turn near the 1500 block of Sykes Creek Drive.
According to witness accounts and video footage, Michaels’ uniquely designed vessel—modeled after a Corvette—was seen spinning in circles, or “doing doughnuts,” before speeding away and colliding with another boat.
The crash, which occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m., interrupted the procession as onlookers celebrating along the shore were stunned, and emergency crews rushed to the crash scene.
Florida Fish and Wildlife officials reported that three individuals sustained minor injuries in the collision, and Brevard County Fire Rescue crews responded quickly to assist the injured. Authorities ticketed Michaels for his role in the crash.
Michaels’ next court date is next month, when he will face the misdemeanor charges.
