WASHINGTON D.C. – President Donald Trump wasted no time utilizing his executive authority as he launched his second term with a series of sweeping actions aimed at delivering on key campaign pledges.
“Today, I will sign a series of historic executive orders. With these actions, we will begin the complete restoration of America and the revolution of commonsense,” Trump declared during his inauguration speech at the U.S. Capitol.
Hours later, Trump followed through, signing a wave of executive orders. In an unprecedented move, the initial signings took place in front of thousands of supporters at Washington’s Capitol One Arena, before transitioning to the more traditional setting of the Oval Office.
“This is pure Trump,” noted Republican strategist Alex Castellanos. “He’s governing in a way that mobilizes the people, aligning outside support with his administration’s agenda.”

Immigration Takes Center Stage
A cornerstone of Trump’s agenda has been immigration reform, a key focus of his campaign. On his first day back in office, Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border and ordered the deployment of U.S. troops to support immigration enforcement efforts. He also reinstated the “Remain in Mexico” policy, requiring asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while their claims are processed. However, it remains unclear whether Mexico will cooperate with this policy as it did during Trump’s first term.
During his campaign, Trump had promised to launch the “largest deportation program of criminals in the history of America.” True to his word, he directed federal agencies to prioritize the removal of criminal non-citizens. Additionally, he signed orders to resume construction of the border wall, which had been halted during President Biden’s administration.
Controversial Birthright Citizenship Order
One of Trump’s more contentious actions on Day One was an executive order to end birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrants. Given that birthright citizenship is protected under the U.S. Constitution, the move immediately sparked legal challenges from civil rights organizations and immigration advocates.
“I will declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions of criminal aliens to their countries of origin,” Trump stated in his inaugural address. He also vowed to end “catch and release” practices, emphasizing stricter enforcement measures.
Targeting Criminal Networks
In addition to immigration reforms, Trump announced plans to escalate the fight against transnational crime. He pledged to designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to enhance federal and state law enforcement efforts.
“We will use the full and immense power of our government to eliminate foreign gangs and criminal networks operating in this country,” Trump proclaimed.
Energy and Economy Reforms
During his two-year campaign to return to the White House, Trump repeatedly championed domestic energy production with the rallying cry, “Drill, baby, drill,” and criticized the Biden administration’s electric vehicle mandates.
On his first day, Trump followed through by tying energy policies to his efforts to combat inflation. “I will direct all members of my cabinet to marshal the vast powers at their disposal to defeat what was record inflation and rapidly bring down costs and prices. The inflation crisis was caused by massive overspending and escalating energy prices,” Trump argued.
The president declared a national energy emergency, pledging to ramp up domestic oil and gas production. “We will drill, baby, drill. America will be a manufacturing nation once again, and we have something that no other manufacturing nation will ever have: the largest amount of oil and gas of any country on Earth,” he said.
Social and Cultural Policies
Trump also targeted several Biden-era policies on his first day. He issued executive orders reversing protections for transgender students, stating, “It will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.” Additionally, Trump ordered the termination of federal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, directing his administration to identify and dismantle such initiatives.
Another campaign promise Trump acted on was pardoning individuals charged in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Speaking to supporters in Washington, D.C., he pledged, “We will be signing pardons for a lot of people…to get them out immediately.” Back at the White House, Trump pardoned approximately 1,500 people, including some convicted of assaulting police officers during the riot.
“These people have been destroyed,” Trump said while signing the pardons. “What they’ve done to these people has been outrageous.”
Symbolic Gestures
In unexpected moves, Trump announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” and to restore the name of Mount Denali to Mount McKinley in honor of the 25th U.S. president.
Challenges Ahead
Despite his sweeping actions, not all campaign promises were addressed on Day One. Notably, Trump did not take immediate steps to end a deadly conflict in Eastern Europe, a prominent vow during his campaign.
Republican strategist Alex Castellanos observed, “He’s flooding the zone, demonstrating action, and rallying support for a massive transformation of government. It’s overwhelming, and Democrats just don’t know what’s hitting them.”
Trump, addressing his supporters during the signings, quipped, “Could you imagine Biden doing this? I don’t think so.”
