Community Foundation for Brevard Announces New Board Members

Director: Emeritus on Erik P. Shuman

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — The Community Foundation for Brevard Board of Directors announced three new members, including Brian W. Hurd, Mildred Prieto, and Mark G. Thompson.

The Board also bestowed the distinction of Director Emeritus on Erik P. Shuman.

These professionals bring expertise and experience in law, financial services, and community engagement, strengthening the Foundation’s mission to serve as a resource for philanthropists and advance Brevard County’s quality of life.

Hurd is the founder of The Law Office of Brian W. Hurd, which is located in Merritt Island. With 21 years of experience as an attorney, he specializes in probate, estate planning, and guardianship. Hurd is an active member of the Florida Bar, including its Elder Law and Real Property, Probate, and Trust Law Sections.

Prieto is an Indialantic resident with more than 25 years of legal experience. She began her career as a prosecutor in the State Attorney’s Office for the 18th Judicial Circuit before establishing her solo practice in 2015. Prieto is now a partner at Betten, Murphy & Weiss, Attorneys, P.A., focusing on estate planning, probate, and trust administration.

With over 30 years of experience in financial services, Thompson advises individuals and corporations on wealth management, retirement planning, and investment strategies. Thompson played a key role in establishing the Melbourne office of Raymond James & Associates, where he serves as a Certified Financial Planner and Investment Management Consultant.

Well-regarded estate attorney Shuman served actively on the Community Foundation Board from 1998 to 2010 and again in 2013 to 2014, including a term as Board Chair. His longstanding ambassadorship and advocacy have made an enduring impact on the Foundation, leading to the Board’s unanimous decision to bestow on him the Director Emeritus distinction.
