Every student—including day students—is assigned to one of four houses: Grissom, Koch, Scott, or Stafford. The Houses are named in honor of an American astronaut, a gesture that recognizes our local and historic ties to Brevard County’s Space Coast, the site of NASA.
After sorting, students remain affiliated with their House for the entirety of their duration at Florida Prep.
The Houses bring together students from across the Middle and Upper Schools, as well as boarders and day students.
Each of the Houses is a microcosm of the international and local diversity at the Academy, and House events afford students the opportunity to meet and engage with others they might not meet in their classrooms or through their activities.
The random sortation ensures that the Houses become spaces where students build unexpected and unpredictable bonds. The House System is designed to cultivate student involvement in volunteer work, academic competitiveness, and community awareness and to promote strong mental and physical health.
“Florida Prep is more than just a school, it’s a family,” said Marine Mikayelyan, mother of Class of 2024 graduate, Karen Vartanyans.

StepUp Scholarship Program
The flags of near 100 countries are represented at Florida Prep’s Hall of Flags as a testament to the diversity and cultural wealth that is embodied in the school’s DNA. Florida Prep students learn about the world not just through books, but through interaction with their peers.
“It really is preparing them to be citizens of the world,” Johnston added. “Florida Prep is a microcosm of the world.”
Approximately half of the student body is from Florida. Florida families can provide a Florida Prep education for their students through the state’s StepUp scholarship program, a game-changer for families to personalize their children’s education. These scholarship funds, available to all Florida families regardless of household income, can be allocated for tuition at private schools such as Florida Prep.
The co-educational institution is well-balanced between boys and girls. Nick Kronman called Florida Prep home during his school years.
“My experience exposed me to a truly diverse and global community,” said the native of St. Croix. “I formed strong relationships, finding common ground and expanding my understanding of different cultures.”
Growing up, Florida Prep junior Aminah Hameedi attended several schools as her family moved around the world.
“Florida Prep has changed me the most,” she said. “The teachers are amazing and I’ve created bonds that won’t ever be broken. Florida Prep has made me out of my shell and given me the chance to try out sports I would have never tried. It has really made an impact.”

Well-Rounded Student-Athletes
Recognizing the vital role of athletics in fostering well-rounded individuals, Florida Prep sports program nurtures both student-athletes eager to pursue sports at a collegiate level, as well as students, who like Aminah, are just interested in exploring new experiences in sports with the goal to promote physical well-being, academic motivation, character development and leadership skills.
“We are proud that at Florida Prep our athletes can excel to heights of competitive success within a community that offers all our students the opportunity to explore sports recreationally whether it be for health and fitness purposes or simply as a social outlet with friends,” said Reeder Ward, dean of academics.

This academic year, the school welcomed one of its own, Florida Prep Class of 2017 alumnus, Montal Stewart, as the new athletic director and head basketball coach. A day student through most of high school, he boarded as a senior in preparation for college.
Many local Florida Prep students choose this option to gain an edge on their college career.
“He has such passion for sports, but also knows how important academic success is,” Ward said.
All students, whether day or boarding, are nurtured to reach his or her highest potential.
“Our motto is to “believe, strive, succeed,” Johnston said. “The students are at the center of everything we do. We foster student ownership of their learning, encouraging them to actively explore, seek knowledge and shape their unique paths to contribute meaningfully to the world.”
Academic plans are tailored to each student’s strengths and needs. Honors, Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses are available in partnership with the nearby Florida Institute of Technology and Eastern Florida State College. Students who can benefit from additional support receive extra help from after-school teacher help sessions, evening study hall and evening tutoring.

Deep Roots in Technology
A school with deep roots in the hub of technology and science that is the Space Coast, Florida Prep takes pride in the scope of its STEM curriculum. Students can explore all facets of STEM, from robotics, cybersecurity and photonics to electrical engineering and even entrepreneurial product design.
“We’re very committed to STEM,” said Ward. “Our school is a pipeline for the workplace,” said Johnston.
The school is forging additional collaborative partnerships with additional institutions of higher learning and major corporate entities such as L3Harris, which sponsors Florida Prep’s robotics program.
“We provide students with unique opportunities to immerse themselves in cutting-edge technology and academia, broadening their perspectives and facilitating their holistic development,” Ward said.
Students’ academic achievements speak to the quality of educators at the school. Graduating classes enjoy a 100 percent college acceptance that include top-tier universities.
Florida Prep offers students the singular opportunity of earning a pilot’s license before even graduating from high school. Florida Prep’s Flight Program provides students with exceptional opportunities to spread their wings and take flight towards their dreams.
Flight training holds a distinguished place in the heritage of Florida Prep. Since 1961, hundreds of students have earned their private pilot licenses before graduation and even before obtaining their driver’s licenses.

Partnership With Florida Tech
The program provides a clear path for current students to enter fulfilling careers in aviation, addressing the current critical pilot shortage worldwide. Many Flight Program alumni later excelled in leadership roles in the Armed Forces and with major commercial airlines, including Delta, American, United and UPS.
The program is offered in partnership with Florida Institute of Technology and Melbourne Flight Training, which operates a fleet of training airplanes at Melbourne Airport. At Florida Prep, students have use of their own Redbird flight simulator, courtesy of Florida Tech. This simulator is a full motion, feature-rich advanced aviation training device equipped to provide real-world flight training.
“The donation of a flight simulator by Florida Tech Aviation reflects the strength of the support Florida Prep receives from our community partners,” Johnston added.
Florida Prep is a family dedicated to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow. “We are shaping the future, one student at a time,” Johnston said.
