BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – The Titusville Police Department received the highest level of achievement in accreditation status in the State of Florida, Excelsior Level.

The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) board members voted unanimously and awarded the department Excelsior status at a ceremony in St. Augustine on February 20.

For several days, three CFA assessors visited Titusville Police and interviewed personnel, scrutinized the facility and equipment, examined records, reviewed department general orders, and inspected items in evidence.

After an intense review, the team of assessors concluded that the agency is in full compliance with the prescribed standards and unanimously recommended to the CFA Commission in favor of re-accreditation.

This is the department’s 15th year being accredited, so it received the Excelsior level. The Department received initial accreditation status in 2010 and has held regular accreditation status for the past 15 years.

To become accredited, an agency must meet hundreds of requirements and standards established by the CFA. The proven standards address all facets of the department, including policy, internal affairs, patrol, investigations, training, response to resistance, and evidence storage.

“Essentially, it means our agency is using the best practices in law enforcement, and we have been thoroughly scrutinized by professionals from outside our agency,” said Titusville Police Chief John Lau.  “This is a great accomplishment that our whole community can be proud of.”

The department will undergo a detailed assessment by the CFA every three years to ensure that all standards are maintained so that the department can retain Excelsior Accredited Status.
