BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Saturn Elementary teacher Karly Anderson was removed from the classroom and placed on paid administrative leave after Brevard Public Schools officials viewed Cocoa Beach Police body camera footage that showed Anderson subjecting officers to foul language and irrational behavior due to being allegedly intoxicated during a house party that involved more than 200 minors.
The body cam video shows the interaction between first responders and Anderson when they arrived at the house party last January.
The State Attorney’s Office for the 18th Judicial Circuit released the police video footage on Monday. Brevard Public Schools Board Vice Chair Matt Susin said on Tuesday that an internal investigation is underway, and Anderson has been removed from the classroom due to the new information.
“We will now investigate to see if that individual was a part of the actual party and move from there,” said Susin, who also said Anderson’s behavior in the video was “deplorable” and “disgusting.”
Susin said Brevard Public Schools officials had not seen the police body cam footage until Monday evening.
Brevard Public Schools spokesperson Janet Murnaghan said Anderson’s classroom reassignment was due to the state attorney’s office’s decision not to pursue felony charges.
“The State Attorney cleared Karly Anderson of the felony charges…the Department of Children and Family Services cleared Ms. Anderson as well,” said Murnaghan.
Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Mark Rendell said that all employees are held to the highest standards of professional conduct.
“The teacher’s actions as seen on the footage were completely unacceptable and do not match the charges given and warrant a further investigation,” said Rendell.
Anderson was initially arrested with then-Roosevelt Elementary principal Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan after the January party at Hill-Brodigan’s home. According to law enforcement, the party included underage drinking, marijuana use, physical altercations, and at least one firearm.
One teen was reportedly found passed out on the lawn due to alcohol, while another was charged with DUI after leaving the gathering.
Anderson and Hill-Brodigan were placed on paid leave and faced charges of child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. In late March, the state attorney formally charged Anderson with two misdemeanors, disorderly conduct and disorderly intoxication.
