BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Eastern Florida State College invites prospective Correctional Officer Certificate Program students to attend an upcoming information session on Wednesday, June 18, from 6- 8 p.m. at the Melbourne Campus Student Union.

The event will detail how EFSC Foundation funding and a state grant can cover nearly all costs associated with the college’s Correctional Officer Career and Technical Certificate Program.

The Corrections Academy prepares students for careers as correctional officers in jails, prisons, and other correctional facilities. Officers play a vital role in maintaining safety and security, supervising incarcerated individuals, enforcing institutional rules, and preventing disturbances and escapes.

Completing the 420-hour, 13-week academy allows graduates to sit for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement State Officer Certification Examination for Corrections. The program is delivered in a structured, paramilitary format, combining classroom instruction with physical fitness and defensive tactics training.

Prospective students are encouraged to contact Melissa Walker, Program Advisor, at the Melbourne Campus, Building 8, Room 201-B. She can be reached at walkerme@easternflorida.edu or by calling 321-433-5637.

Application Process and Screening Requirements

Prospective students must complete a multi-step application process that includes:

• Applying for general admission to EFSC.

• Attending a mandatory intake meeting.

• Completing background screening and the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test through EFSC’s partner, the Brevard Police Testing and Selection Center.

• Participating in a mandatory program orientation.

To be considered, applicants must meet eligibility requirements under Florida law, including successfully completing the background check. Once a minimum number of applicants is reached, class start dates are announced.

Significant Financial Support Available

Thanks to the EFSC Foundation and a state grant, eligible students may have nearly all program costs covered, including:

• The $150 background screening fee.

• The $39 CJBAT testing fee.

• Tuition, textbooks, and uniforms for students who qualify for Florida residency or a residency waiver.

Estimated program costs for Florida residents total approximately $2,500, with the majority covered by grant funding. Additional financial support may be available through Veterans Educational Benefits, EFSC Scholarships, Florida Prepaid College Plans, and Florida Bright Futures. Due to the program’s short length, it does not qualify for federal financial aid such as Pell Grants.
