BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Central Florida drivers are already experiencing faster commutes, thanks to a major transportation milestone delivered months ahead of schedule.
The Florida Department of Transportation has successfully opened the I-4 Express lanes to U.S. 27, marking a significant achievement under the Moving Florida Forward initiative. This expansion of the I-4 corridor is designed to ease traffic congestion and enhance mobility for residents and visitors across Central Florida.
Governor Ron DeSantis, who has championed the state’s infrastructure upgrades, announced the early opening of the new lanes, eight months ahead of the projected timeline. Since their launch, the express lanes have had a tangible impact, reportedly cutting travel times in half through one of the most traffic-heavy segments of the interstate.

“This is a big win for Florida drivers,” said Governor DeSantis. “By accelerating the delivery of these congestion relief lanes, we’re not only improving daily commutes but also reaffirming our commitment to bold, results-driven leadership in infrastructure.”
FDOT praised the success of the project as a model of efficient planning and execution. The agency emphasized that this milestone demonstrates the value and momentum behind the Moving Florida Forward initiative, which aims to expedite transportation solutions that directly benefit Floridians.
As population growth and tourism continue to place increased demands on the state’s transportation network, projects like the I-4 Express lanes are seen as vital steps in ensuring Florida remains connected, competitive, and commuter-friendly.
