Priya Morioka has Built her Career on Communication, Cultural Understanding, and Ethical Leadership

Prior to becoming an international businesswoman, Priya Morioka experienced firsthand how language and cultural barriers could affect real-world outcomes. Born in India and raised in a multilingual home, her community was heavily impacted by immigration, which meant that communication was rarely straightforward. 

In the neighborhoods and systems around her, communication gaps not only cause confusion. They also often influenced how people were treated and what opportunities and resources they had access to. 

Those early experiences left a lasting impression. She came to believe that cross-cultural communication wasn’t just a skill, but the key to better opportunities, and that belief has stayed with her throughout the entirety of her career. 

Today, as Chief Operating Officer of Global Language Connections, she supports culturally competent language and cross-cultural services that help entities understand each other through a shared language.

Learning About Different Cultures by Living Within Them

Over the years, Morioka has held leadership roles in some of the most well-known brands in food and consumer goods, including General Mills, Schwan’s Foods, Caribou Coffee, and Whirlpool. Her career has spanned operations, business planning, and finance, and she has lived and worked in the United States, Canada, and Asia. 

That exposure to different industries and countries helped her see how often communication breaks down—not because people don’t care, but because they aren’t equipped to close those cultural and linguistic disparities. Her own life experience made that reality hard to ignore. Having crossed cultures herself, she understood what it felt like to learn new systems, adjust to unfamiliar expectations, and still try to preserve her identity in the process.

When she helped co-found Global Language Connections, she wanted the company to do more than translate. She wanted it to meet people where they are and offer meaningful support in the areas that have the biggest impact on people’s daily lives.

Creating Strong Systems Without Sacrificing Flexibility

In her role as COO, Priya Morioka is responsible for the company’s daily operations and long-term direction. That includes deciding how services are created, improved, and expanded. Instead of rushing to grow, she focuses on what will serve people well in the long run.

Each new program is developed with long-term adaptability in mind, and that flexibility allows the company to respond to change while keeping its values intact. In moments of busyness or pressure, she and her team rely on a simple question: “If we were running the company, what would we do?” This helps her make choices she can stand behind.

Morioka holds herself accountable by imagining every decision as if it were being made in front of an audience. She considers whether her explanation for the decision would hold up if a reporter asked about it or if it went viral on social media. Thinking about these very real possibilities helps her stay true to the people she serves and the values she holds. 

To keep projects moving in the right direction, she uses the SMART framework, which means that every goal must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. This is especially helpful when she’s trying to ensure that new program goals are compliant with institutional standards.

Leadership That Puts People First

As a leader, Morioka focuses on clear communication, empathy, and making it easy for others to approach her. When hard conversations arise, she separates the issue from the person and invites collaboration instead. This helps reframe the discussion around shared goals and personal growth. 

She also listens closely, assumes good intentions, and asks whether the other person has any ideas for a solution in mind. From there, she offers support so that they can move forward together.  Delegation is an area Morioka continues to work on, as she strives to find the right balance between staying involved and giving others room to take ownership of tasks. 

As the company grows and transitions, she aims to match responsibilities with each team member’s strengths. At the same time, she ensures that the work the team does aligns with the organization’s goals and core values. 

Grounded by Education and Early Values

Morioka’s leadership style has been influenced not only by experience but also by her education and principles. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and later completed her MBA at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. While in school for her master’s degree, she served on the Admissions Committee and was selected as a William Davidson Fellow.

Raised in a Christian family, Morioka learned the importance of treating people with respect and fairness from a young age. Throughout high school, college, and graduate school, she took courses in ethics that deepened her sense of responsibility and helped her think carefully about the impact of her choices.

Turning Conflict into Connection

Priya Morioka has demonstrated her strength as a leader most clearly during moments of pressure, especially when Global Language Connections has faced conflict with customers. In one instance, a client believed they’d been misbilled after a handoff from a previous staff member. While the billing was accurate, the client was visibly frustrated.

Instead of pointing to the fine print, she chose to prioritize the relationship with the client, taking proactive steps to address the issue. She listened and responded humbly, reassuring the client that they had done nothing wrong, which effectively preserved a positive, long-term relationship. As a precaution, the company also adjusted other contracts so that the same problem wouldn’t come up again in the future. 

Where Character Matters More Than Credentials

As someone who leads with values and people at the center, having a team that does the same is important to Morioka. For her, it’s less about résumés and more about service, honesty, self-direction, and a willingness to grow. 

She looks for people who are mission-driven and committed to doing the right thing, especially when no one is watching. Being able to adapt is also an important trait, since change is constant in her industry. Surrounding herself with people who embody these qualities allows her to build a team that’s not only strong but deeply aligned with the business’s goals and able to carry them forward with integrity.

Serving Communities Beyond the Workplace

Outside of her full-time work, Priya Morioka has lent her time and perspective to several community organizations that share her values. She has served on the boards of AEON, Agape Oasis Child Development, and the Harvest Network of Schools—Best Academy. 

She has also contributed to state and community-level initiatives, including serving on Governor Tim Walz’s Workforce Development Board and joining the Friends of the Future Committee for the Northside Achievement Zone.

In each of these roles, she brings attention to the deeper links between language, access, and opportunity. She sees communication not as a box to check, but as a key part of equity itself. It’s a way to build trust, to create fairness, and to give people an actual shot at success, no matter their background.
