BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA — The Florida Sheriff’s Association Commanders Academy, a prestigious leadership training initiative for senior law enforcement personnel, is currently underway in the state’s capital. Among the featured instructors is Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, who delivered a presentation on modern-day community policing; an increasingly vital topic in the realm of public safety.
As Training Coordinator for the Florida Sheriff’s Association, Sheriff Ivey addressed a cohort of high-ranking command staff from Sheriff’s Offices across Florida. The three-week academy is designed to enhance leadership capabilities, strategic thinking, and operational effectiveness among future law enforcement executives.
Sheriff Ivey emphasized the critical role of community engagement and crime prevention strategies in shaping successful law enforcement outcomes. Drawing from his own agency’s accomplishments, he highlighted that Brevard County has experienced a 52% reduction in crime over the past 12 years—an achievement largely attributed to proactive policing and meaningful community partnerships.

“I’m honored to be part of a program that shapes the future leadership of law enforcement across our state,” said Ivey. “Community policing isn’t just a strategy. It’s a commitment to building trust and reducing crime by working hand-in-hand with the people we serve.”
The Florida Sheriff’s Association continues to play a pivotal role in supporting the state’s 67 Sheriff’s Offices through training, advocacy, and professional development programs like the Commanders Academy.
