This collaboration aims to raise awareness about a dangerous behavior that continues to occur far too often, with drivers stopping on active railroad tracks during traffic congestion.

“While many do so unintentionally, the consequences can be severe,” said a city official.

“Drivers sometimes find themselves stuck on the tracks when traffic backs up. But even a momentary stop can put lives at risk.”

The campaign encourages all motorists to stay behind the designated white stop bar when approaching railroad crossings, especially during periods of high traffic. Clear signage and safety markings are already in place throughout the city to guide drivers, but officials say more outreach is needed.

In an ongoing effort to promote public safety, Cocoa city officials have partnered with GoBrightline to share a vital and obvious message with motorists: Do not stop on the tracks.

“Stopping on the tracks isn’t just a safety hazard, it’s also expensive,” the spokesperson added. “Fines start at $500.”

During the recent safety operation, officers issued warnings rather than citations, choosing to focus on education and awareness. Still, the city made it clear that enforcement will be stepped up if risky behavior continues.

“Our top priority is always your safety,” the spokesperson emphasized. “We want everyone to get home safely, whether they’re driving, riding the train, or crossing on foot.”

As the city and GoBrightline continue their joint outreach, residents are reminded to stay alert, follow traffic signs, and never gamble with railroad safety.
