BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA — A crane collapsed onto a single-family home on Mackeral Drive in Merritt Island on Wednesday afternoon, causing significant damage but leaving no one injured, according to officials.
Brevard County Fire Rescue confirmed crews responded to the scene at approximately 12:34 p.m. The home was unoccupied at the time of the incident.
The equipment’s owner, Big Iron International, acknowledged the collapse but declined to release additional details.
The crane was being used to remove a utility pole when it tipped over, crashing through the roof and into the kitchen area, witnesses said.
The homeowner, who has lived in the residence with his wife for four decades, said utility crews had been working in the yard when they accidentally broke a water main. The break reportedly softened the ground beneath the crane, causing it to lose stability.
The property, estimated to be worth about $500,000, sustained what appears to be significant structural damage. The full extent of the destruction and the precise cause of the collapse remain under investigation.
Officials have not announced whether repairs to nearby utilities contributed to the mishap.
