BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA — The Eastern Florida State College men’s soccer team opened the regular season with a 3-2 victory Thursday afternoon at Orlando Health Stadium.
The Titans picked up the win over No. 10 Monroe University with a late goal from defender Tarik Ferraz Freire.
Pablo Ossabal Arboleda made a couple of great saves in the first couple of minutes in the contest to keep Monroe University off the scoreboard.
It proved to be big as eight minutes into the game it was Ryoyo Shibata who scored the first goal of the season with a nice header on a strong cross.
The lead would not last long as the Mustangs would tie the game 1-1 off a nice free kick that Abel Ador headed into the corner of the net.
Monroe University would take the lead less than 10 minutes later right after the water break as Braxton Richards hit a free kick that Arboleda made a nice save but the rebound came out and Mohamed Lamine Mansare headed it into the back of the net.
Monroe University would go a man down after two yellow cards and the Titans took over in the second half.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, as Henry Crosthwaite took a couple of dribbles and hit a shot that floated over the keeper and into the net to tie the game 2-2.
It looked like the Titans took the lead with just under 20 minutes left, but the goal was knocked off the line in the play and the goal was ruled off.
But with 15 minutes left, Freire would give the Titans the lead on a long throw-in that the goalie punched out, but Freire was there and blasted it into the back of the net.
The Titans would hang on for the win to begin the season 1-0 for the third straight season.
Eastern Florida State College will travel to Eastern Oklahoma State College for a game on Thursday at 5 p.m. as the first of three straight road games before returning to Orlando Health Stadium on Sept. 12 for a 1 p.m. game against Enterprise State Community College.
