BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey is urging residents to remain cautious as a new wave of text message scams circulates, targeting bank customers with claims about recent purchases.
The messages typically arrive as if from a financial institution and ask whether the recipient has recently made a purchase. They often include a link or prompt for a quick response.
Authorities emphasize that these texts are designed to trick people into giving away personal information or account access.
Authorities warn that residents should never click the links or respond directly to these messages. Instead, anyone who receives such a text should contact their bank using the official phone number listed on the back of their bank card or on the institution’s website.
Additionally, residents are advised not to answer phone calls that appear to be follow-up calls on the scam texts. Many fraudsters will attempt to call victims after sending messages, with the goal of building trust and gathering sensitive information.
Law enforcement and consumer protection agencies remind the public that banks will not request account details, PIN numbers, or passwords through unsolicited text messages or phone calls.
Staying alert and verifying suspicious activity directly with your bank remains the safest way to protect accounts from fraud.
