Investigation continues after 61-year-old Melbourne man killed in Mims hit-and-run

A 61-year-old Melbourne man was killed late Sunday night in a hit-and-run crash on U.S. Highway 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. FHP has asked anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has information about the fleeing vehicle to come forward.

BREVARD COUNTY • MIMS, FLORIDA — Florida Highway Patrol troopers have released new information about a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 61-year-old Melbourne man late Sunday night in Mims.

In an update on Wednesday, FHP said the vehicle involved is possibly an orange Chevrolet Sonic, model years 2012 to 2016.

It is expected to have front-end and possible windshield damage, and troopers said the vehicle could be tarped to conceal the damage.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers have released new information about a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 61-year-old Melbourne man late Sunday night in Mims. In an update on Wednesday, FHP said the vehicle involved is possibly an orange Chevrolet Sonic, model years 2012 to 2016, like the one above.

The fatal crash happened around 10:50 p.m. on U.S. Highway 1 near Orbiter Court, when an unidentified vehicle struck the back of a 2025 Jiang Zhon motorcycle traveling southbound.

The impact threw the rider from the motorcycle and onto the roadway. The driver of the striking vehicle did not stop and continued southbound, troopers said.

Emergency crews transported the injured motorcyclist to Parrish Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Investigators noted the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The investigation into the deadly hit-and-run remains ongoing.
