Brevard Public Schools Honors 2025 Teacher and Employee of the Year Finalists With Surprise Celebrations

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard Public Schools celebrated some of its most exceptional educators and employees recently, naming the finalists for the district’s prestigious Teacher of the Year and Employee of the Year awards.
In true surprise fashion, district leaders, school administrators, and cheering colleagues showed up unannounced at each finalist’s campus—delighting winners before whisking them away for a special luncheon held in their honor.
The annual tradition recognizes staff members whose dedication, innovation, and unwavering commitment have made a measurable difference in the lives of Brevard’s 72,000 students.
This year’s group represents a wide range of disciplines, grade levels, and roles, yet they share a common thread: each consistently goes above and beyond to support student success.

Teacher of the Year Finalists
These six educators were selected from nominees across the district for their instructional excellence, student-centered leadership, and ability to create dynamic, inclusive learning environments:
Hannah Denny – 7th Grade Teacher, James Madison Middle School
Known for her energetic classroom and strong rapport with students, Denny has become a standout in motivating middle-schoolers to excel academically and personally.
Michelle Hanus – ESOL Teacher, Melbourne High School
Hanus is celebrated for her dedication to multilingual learners, helping students from diverse backgrounds find their footing and thrive in new academic surroundings.
Stephanie Castaldo – Math Teacher, L.B. Johnson Middle School
A champion of hands-on, real-world math instruction, Castaldo is recognized for transforming students’ confidence in a core subject that many find challenging.
Shannon Shakespeare – PE Teacher, Golfview Elementary Magnet School
Shakespeare’s commitment to health, wellness, and character-building has made her a beloved figure who inspires students to stay active and develop lifelong healthy habits.
Brenda Mashiotta – Title I & STEM Teacher, Jupiter Elementary School
From innovative STEM lessons to focused instruction, Mashiotta helps ensure students have access to high-quality learning opportunities.
Holly Barbour – 4th Grade Teacher, Imperial Estates Elementary School
Barbour’s warm but structured classroom environment is credited with sparking curiosity and fostering academic growth among her young learners.

Employee of the Year Finalists
Brevard’s schools rely on a vast team of professionals who support students far beyond the classroom. The district’s Employee of the Year finalists embody that essential behind-the-scenes dedication:
Chris Hattaway – School Resource Officer, Rockledge High School
Hattaway is recognized not only for maintaining campus safety but also for building trust, mentoring students, and strengthening community relationships.
Matt France – Technology Associate, Kennedy Middle School
Known as the person who keeps the school running smoothly, France supports teachers, students, and staff with everything from device management to instructional tech integration.
Cheri Meyer – Early Childhood Program Specialist, Curriculum & Instruction
Meyer’s work in early learning has shaped districtwide foundational programs, directly impacting school readiness and early academic success.
Susan Kunkel – Office Clerk, Westside Elementary School
Often the first friendly face families see, Kunkel is recognized for her professionalism, efficiency, and compassion in supporting students and staff.
Emilee Floyd – ESE Paraprofessional, Astronaut High School
Floyd is celebrated for her patience, skill, and dedication in supporting students with exceptionalities, helping them reach new levels of independence and achievement.
Jake Kraus – Theater Manager, Satellite High School
Kraus brings creativity and technical expertise to the school’s performing arts program, guiding students and elevating productions enjoyed by the entire community.
This year’s finalists exemplify the heart of Brevard Public Schools—professionals who bring passion, care, and innovation to their work every day.
District leaders emphasized that these awards shine a spotlight not only on individual achievement but on the countless contributions made by all educators and support staff across the county.
The winners will be announced at Brevard Public Schools’ annual “Applauding Excellence” awards ceremony early next year, which will be streamed live on Space Coast Daily TV.
For now, the district is celebrating the remarkable group of finalists who continue to inspire students, strengthen school communities, and demonstrate what educational excellence looks like in Brevard County.
