Learn the Ins and Outs of County Government at Brevard’s Citizens Academy

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Brevard County residents interested in learning how local government works — and how they can play a more active role in shaping their community — are invited to apply for the 2026 Citizens Academy, a free, in-depth civics education program designed to provide a behind-the-scenes look at county operations.
The 2026 Citizens Academy will meet every Thursday for seven weeks, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning February 12 and concluding March 26. The course is free to attend; however, lunch will not be provided.

With fewer than 40 percent of Americans reporting confidence in their understanding of local government, organizers say the Citizens Academy aims to close that knowledge gap while encouraging meaningful civic engagement.
The program explores how county government balances individual liberties with the public good, addressing essential community needs, including public safety, education, infrastructure, and responsible growth.
Participants will gain firsthand insight into how Brevard County develops its budget, plans and paves roads, trains employees, and delivers services across departments. The academy also emphasizes open communication between residents and county staff, creating opportunities for dialogue and collaboration.
Past graduates of the Citizens Academy have gone on to serve on advisory boards, participate in community leadership roles, and become more informed advocates for their neighborhoods.
Residents interested in participating can register for Citizens Academy 2026 on the UF/IFAS Brevard County Extension Eventbrite page, which also lists additional classes and programs.
Organizers encourage residents seeking a deeper understanding of how their county functions and how they can make a difference to consider participating in this unique civic learning experience.
