William “Bill” Stevenson, 77, the ex-husband of former First Lady Jill Biden, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson, following an investigation into her death in Delaware.
On December 28, 2025, New Castle County Police officers responded to a reported domestic dispute at a residence in the Oak Hill community of Wilmington, Delaware, shortly after 11:15 p.m.
Upon entering the home on the 1300 block of Idlewood Road, officers discovered 64-year-old Linda Stevenson lying unresponsive in the living room. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by responders, she was later pronounced dead at the scene.
After a weeks-long investigation, authorities arrested Stevenson at the same home on February 2, taking him into custody without incident.

A grand jury subsequently returned an indictment charging him with first-degree murder in connection with Linda’s death. Stevenson was unable to post the $500,000 bail set by the court and was committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution.
Police have not yet publicly released a specific cause or manner of death for Linda Stevenson; autopsy results, expected to clarify those details, have not been disclosed.
Stevenson and Jill Biden — then Jill Jacobs – were married in February 1970. During their marriage, Stevenson operated The Stone Balloon, a popular college bar and live music venue near the University of Delaware campus.
The couple separated in 1974, and their divorce was finalized in May 1975.
Jill Biden met then-Delaware Senator Joe Biden on a blind date in 1975, and they married in June 1977.
