BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA — The Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists will host a special fiber arts demonstration at 10 a.m. on March 28 at the Merritt Island Public Library.

This event will give attendees the opportunity to learn how to transform flax fibers into artistic felted creations.

During the program, award-winning fiber artist Ann Welly Revels will present a demonstration on the process of felting flax.

Flax is a natural plant fiber that becomes linen when spun into yarn. During the presentation, Revels will explain the different uses of flax and describe how the fiber is processed before it can be spun into linen thread.

She will also demonstrate how unspun flax fibers can be felted using water and pressure.

Because the process involves water and can be messy, organizers say the session will be presented as a demonstration rather than a hands-on workshop.

Revels plans to bring several examples of felted flax sheets decorated with embedded objects. These artistic materials can be used in a variety of ways, including greeting card paper, jewelry components, and decorative pieces.

She will also showcase three-dimensional containers, strips woven into baskets, and pieces that can be sewn directly onto clothing.

A longtime supporter of fiber arts in Florida, Revels is known for her work in multiple disciplines, including palm-skin basketry, handmade paper, and off-loom weaving techniques.

She is also a founding member of the Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists and has served as an officer in several local and state guilds. In addition, she previously represented Florida in the Handweavers Guild of America.

Founded in 1983, the Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists promotes exploration of a wide range of fiber arts. Guild members regularly share techniques and creative approaches through monthly presentations and workshops.

While traditional thread-based crafts remain central to the organization, members also explore disciplines such as weaving, basketmaking, spinning, dyeing and rug hooking, often incorporating materials ranging from natural fibers to metal, paper and recycled plastics.

The guild also hosts smaller satellite groups focused on rug hooking, spinning, tapestry, and projects using upcycled materials.

The guild meets on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Merritt Island Public Library. Meetings are free and open to the public.
