Who is Favorite to Lift This Season’s Super Bowl?

Preseason is over and the regular season in the NFL is about to begin. After a turbulent time last season that saw many conferences cut their campaigns short due to COVID-19, we’re back to a full number of games for 2021. Yes, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC) are back, and all 32 teams will be raring to go.

There are so many changes this season though. You’ve had new players brought in with the NFL Draft, players released and signed on waivers, as well as a few free agents who have been picked up too. But who is likely to make it to the Super Bowl game come the end of the year? Which two teams are likely to go all the way?

Well, let’s take a little look at who the favorites are…

The two top contenders

Out of the 32 teams that collectively make up the NFL, only two can make it to the Super Bowl final. But which two will that be? Well, if you look at NFL futures picks or just in general what the top pundits are saying about the upcoming campaign, we could see a repeat of last season’s Super Bowl game earlier this year.

That game of course involved the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Go back to February when this game took place, the Chiefs with Mahomes at the helm were clear favorites to win. In fact, the Buccaneers were almost a surprise inclusion in the final game.

But Tom Brady and some other inspired signings helped carry the team all the way last season, despite the aforementioned disruptions caused by COVID-19.

Sadly, for the Chiefs, on the day their defence couldn’t hold up to that of the Buccaneers. And that’s ultimately what helped the Buccaneers lift the Vince Lombardi trophy. As Tom Brady was allowed to throw rocket after rocket and claim a record 7th Super Bowl ring, whereas Mahomes was left rueing missed chances that his defence couldn’t capitalise on.

Still, his team will likely have learned from their mistakes, and with a few new additions are favorites to lift the trophy this year. But the Buccaneers have been underestimated once before, so despite improved odds this season, making them second favorites to go all the way, they’ve just as good a chance as anyone.

If not better, because last year despite an aging legend operating at QB in Brady, the team had quite a young defence, and they will have learned a lot over the last campaign. Add that to the quality they already possess, and they’re a force to be reckoned with.

Who else could challenge?

Well, the real challengers are few and far between. Whilst many teams such as the Jacksonville jaguars have been making headlines since the last season, specifically for signing NFL 1st round Draft pick Trevor Lawrence, this is a team they’re building for the future. And that is where many teams are at right now.

They lost a lot of money due to COVID-19, have had to shift a few things around, and are now building for a brighter future with young talents.

But there are some real contenders around too who could compete this season. One of those contenders may be a surprise inclusion, because it’s the Buffalo Bills. A team that hasn’t made a Super Bowl final since the 90s, and of the ones they have made, they’ve lost them all. They really don’t have a good track record.

However, they already started their rebuilding process some time ago. And now, they have some excellent talent on their roster, with Josh Allen at QB pulling the strings for the Bills offensive line. They’ve been getting better and better as each season passes, and if they’re ever going to do anything of significance, now is the time.

The next possible challenger that could really provide some competition for the place in the Super Bowl is the San Francisco 49ers.

The problem is, the team has talent, but no one knows what their starting roster is yet. Sure, they have their 53-man squad submitted, but it includes both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance who are both vying for the QB slot.

They’ve been mixing it up in preseason, and if this continues into the regular season, it can go one of two ways. It can give them an edge as opposition don’t know what to expect, and the 49ers can mix things up constantly, as long as the team feels confident about both players. Or, it could tear the team apart with no sense of direction without a defined starting QB.

They definitely have the ability in the roster to make it through the Playoffs in the postseason, but it’s whether they have the mentality. Whether they have the focus and determination. If they can work well together as one, they stand as good a chance as any. If they’re left feeling divided though, then it could be all doom and gloom.

Conclusion

And there you have it, our top two teams for the Super Bowl are last season’s finalists. Whilst odds may be stacked in the favor of the Chiefs, we have to say we think the Buccaneers can do it again. But it won’t be easy for Brady to win an eighth ring.

And then you have the outsiders, the teams that can potentially get there, but also wouldn’t be surprising if they didn’t. But who knows what will happen, let’s just enjoy the season and find out how it all unfolds.
