Mathers Bridge Closed to Boating Traffic Due to Impending Hurricane Nicole
By Space Coast Daily // November 9, 2022
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – In anticipation of increasing winds and declining weather conditions due to impending Hurricane Nicole, Mathers Bridge will be closed to boating traffic effective 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8.
The 700-foot-long swing span bridge has recently been the focus of repairs that included installation of two actuators and three motors that help open and close the historic bridge, which was built in 1927.
The bridge connects South Tropical Trail on the southern end of Merritt Island to the western end of Banana River Drive in Indian Harbour Beach.
The bridge was physically secured and tied down at 5pm Tuesday and will remain closed to boating traffic until further notice.
All boaters needing to get from one side of the bridge to the other need to make preparations on Tuesday, since the bridge will not be reopened until storm conditions subside and the bridge can be assessed.
Mathers Bridge will remain open to motor vehicle traffic.
