Cocoa’s UF/IFAS Extension Office to Host Mental Health First Aid Training Sept. 26

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Did you know that 10.2% of Youth will be diagnosed with a substance use disorder in their lifetime? Or that 1 out of 5 teens and young adults are living with a mental health condition? In response to these issues, the UF/IFAS Extension Brevard County Office will bring Youth Mental Health First Aid training to our community on Thursday, September 26.
This class will be held at the UF/IFAS Extension Office in Cocoa on September 26 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help adolescents (age 12-18) who are experiencing a mental health crisis or addiction challenge.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.
Just as CPR helps even those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis.
Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step Action Plan that guides them through reaching out and offering appropriate support.
All participants must complete a 2-hour, self-paced online assignment before attending the course. On the day of, participants will attend a 5-hour, in-person instructor-led training.
