BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – In honor of National Suicide Awareness Month, a local non-profit called “Do It For Hunter” is holding a special day on Saturday to help the Merritt Island and surrounding communities share the message of “You Matter.”

This is the third year in a row for this important day of reminding everyone that they are loved and people care about them.

YOU MATTER DAY will be held Saturday, September 21 at the Merritt Island High School student parking lot, but it will spread throughout the community with a free scavenger hunt for anyone who is up for the challenge.

The goal for You Matter Day is to provide helpful resources to those who may be struggling with anxiety and depression. It also aims to promote the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

“Suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15 to 24 years olds,” said Kelly Haskins, Founder of Do It For Hunter.

“After losing my 18-year old-son Hunter to suicide shortly after he started college at UCF, I needed to turn grief into something good, and be proactive for others, so that another family doesn’t have to experience what our family and friends have had to go through.”

The epicenter will be the Merritt Island High School student parking lot, which will turn into You Matter Central, hosting fun games, a dunk tank, food trucks, and drawings for giveaways from local businesses. A free community scavenger hunt will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at local businesses.

Each participating business will provide a You Matter activity or give-away, plus you’ll get a drawing ticket to bring back to Merritt Island High School for a chance to win prizes provided by local businesses.

The more locations you visit, the more tickets you’ll earn. Drop your tickets into the drawing box at Merritt Island High School for drawings at 12 noon and 2 p.m.

“Last year’s You Matter Day was so great, we had to do it again,” said Haskins. “All activities are free.”
