TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – Governor Ron DeSantis was joined by Doctors Against Amendments 3 and 4 on Tuesday, just a week before the 2024 election on November 5.

Amendment 4 consists of just 39 words, yet it poses significant risks to the safety and rights of Floridians, according to Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The amendment fails to define critical terms such as “viability,” “health care provider,” and “patient’s health.”

Amendment 4 states, “No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider. This amendment does not change the Legislature’s constitutional authority to require notification to a parent or guardian before a minor has an abortion.”

The lack of clarity creates loopholes and allows late-term abortions—far beyond when science confirms that a baby can feel pain, DeSantis says.

Amendment 4 would uniquely allow minors to undergo abortions without parental consent, making it the only medical procedure exempt from this critical safeguard in Florida.

“The troubling implications of Amendment 4 are underscored by Michigan, where a similar amendment, written and bankrolled by the ACLU, was approved. The same ACLU lawyers behind Amendment 4 are currently suing Michigan to mandate taxpayer funding for elective abortions.”

Floridians must know that the same scenario could unfold in Florida if Amendment 4 is passed.
