Cocoa Police Department Promotes Detective Rickford Leitch to Sergeant, Will Bring Leadership to Patrol Division

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Cocoa Police Chief Evander Collier IV announced the promotion of Detective Rickford Leitch to sergeant, effective March 10.

He will bring his leadership and expertise to the patrol division in his new role.

“With his leadership, experience, and steadfast commitment, I am confident Detective Leitch will serve as both a mentor and role model for new officers while making a lasting, positive impact on our agency and the community,” said Chief Collier.

Since joining the Cocoa Police Department in January 2013, Sergeant Leitch has built an impressive career.

A graduate of the law enforcement academy at Eastern Florida State College in 2012, he has served in various critical roles with the Cocoa Police Department, including patrol officer, traffic/motor officer, traffic homicide investigator, crisis negotiations team member, field training officer, and most recently, detective.

“His passion for law enforcement was sparked by his experience as a foster parent, where he witnessed firsthand the profound impact officers can have on families and children,” said a Cocoa police spokesperson. “This personal mission fuels his dedication to service and community engagement.”

Currently, the Cocoa Police Department performs its primary functions through the following divisions:

Administration: Office of Chief of Police, Professional Compliance, and Public Information and Media Relations
Investigations: Criminal Investigations, Special Investigations, Criminal Intelligence Analysis, Property and Evidence, Crime Scene, and Victim Services
Operations: Patrol, SWAT, Crisis Negotiations, K-9, School Resource, Community Response Team, Traffic Unit, Training, Crossing Guards, Police Athletic League, and V-COPs
Support Services: Accreditation, Budget, Communications Center, Grants Management and Records
