ORLANDO, FLORIDA — In a game packed with big plays, late-game drama, and high stakes, the Bishop Moore Hornets held off a furious rally by the Eau Gallie Commodores to win the Region 2–3A championship 31-28 on Friday night.
Bishop Moore (12–1) jumped out to an early lead behind a 68-yard touchdown run by senior Amar’e Johnson and an early field goal after an Eau Gallie fumble. The Hornets carried a 10–0 advantage into the first quarter.
Eau Gallie answered before halftime thanks to a two-yard touchdown run by Xavier Lherisse — cutting the deficit to 10–6.
But Bishop Moore pulled away in the second half, scoring three times — including two more rushing touchdowns by Johnson, who also surpassed Bishop Moore’s single-season rushing record and eclipsed 2,000 career rushing yards in the process — and a long 77-yard touchdown catch by Kenyon Alston.
By the end of the third quarter, the Hornets led 31–14, appearing well on their way to a comfortable win.
Yet Eau Gallie refused to go quietly.
The Commodores — behind Lherisse, who finished with four total touchdowns – three passing, one rushing — ignited a fourth-quarter surge.
After recovering an onside kick, they capitalized on a tipped pass that turned into a go-ahead touchdown, followed by another touchdown and a successful two-point conversion. Suddenly, it was 31–28, and the momentum seemed to shift Eau Gallie’s way.
Despite the furious rally, Bishop Moore ran out the clock in the final minutes, sealing the win over Eau Gallie, which finishes the season 9–4.
