Pickup Truck Goes Airborne in Deadly I-95 Crash in Melbourne

A woman was killed Tuesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Melbourne that shut down all southbound lanes for several hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A woman was killed Tuesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Melbourne that shut down all southbound lanes for several hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 4:12 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 188, just north of the Pineda Causeway in Brevard County.

Preliminary information from FHP indicates that the driver of a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling southbound in the inside lane when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway to the left and struck a crash attenuator.

After the initial impact, the truck went airborne, began to overturn, and collided with a second vehicle, an Audi RS 7.

Debris from the crash then struck a third vehicle, a 2021 Toyota RAV4, troopers said.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, described as an adult female whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of the Audi and the Toyota were not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.

All southbound lanes of I-95 were closed following the crash as troopers conducted their on-scene investigation. Traffic was diverted off the interstate at the Pineda Causeway, causing significant delays during the afternoon commute.

The crash remains under active investigation, and no further details were immediately available. Florida Highway Patrol officials said a media release will be issued once additional information is obtained.

The incident is being investigated by troopers from FHP Troop D.
