BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Melbourne Orlando International Airport has begun demolition of its Southside T-hangars, marking a significant step toward future aviation development and modernization of the airfield.

The Southside T-hangars, which have been in continuous use since the 1960s, are being removed to make room for new aviation infrastructure that will support the airport’s continued growth.

Airport officials say the project will pave the way for future improvements, including a planned satellite fixed base operator (FBO) designed to serve aircraft utilizing the Hyatt Place Melbourne Airport hotel, which is located directly on airport property.

Fly-in hotels are rare across the United States and especially uncommon at commercial service airports, making the Hyatt Place and the proposed satellite FBO a distinctive feature for MLB and the Space Coast.

“This project represents the next step in modernizing our airport while honoring its history,” said Greg Donovan, A.A.E., executive director of Melbourne Orlando International Airport.

“These hangars served generations of pilots for more than six decades. Their removal allows us to create new infrastructure that supports growth, enhances service offerings, and strengthens MLB’s position as a unique aviation destination.”

Donovan officially kicked off the demolition effort by operating an excavator to begin removal of the hangar structures.

The demolition project is being carried out by Advanced Demolition, LLC of Casselberry, Florida.

The scope of work includes the removal of six aging T-hangar buildings along with their associated foundations. Airport officials estimate the demolition phase will be completed within approximately one month.

Following completion of the demolition, the airport will move forward with the bidding process for the construction of a newly designed apron area. The apron will support the future satellite FBO and related aviation operations serving the Hyatt Place Melbourne Airport.

Since opening, the Hyatt Place Melbourne Airport has become a unique addition to the airport campus, offering direct access to the airfield, a short walk to the passenger terminal, and the Runway Rooftop Bar & Grill, which provides close-up views of runway activity.

Airport leaders say the planned satellite FBO will further enhance the experience for general aviation pilots and passengers while supporting continued aviation activity at MLB.

Melbourne Orlando International Airport is a commercial and general aviation hub on Florida’s Space Coast, known for its strategic location, growing tenant base, and role as a key driver of regional economic development.

Airport officials say MLB remains committed to innovation, operational excellence, and improving the quality of life in the communities it serves.
