BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – On Thursday, it was the visiting Sebastian River Sharks who took down the hosting Merritt Island Mustangs. After exciting Freshman and Junior Varsity games, the Varsity teams took the floor.
The Merritt Island Mustangs sat right at .500 on the season; three of their eight losses have come by six points or less, which could be a difference in district positioning and overall motivation.
Merritt Island was 2-1 in their last three games with a 46-26 win over Cocoa Beach (who they previously lost to by 1), 53-45 close win over Odyssey Charter School, and a 67-35 loss to a talented Satellite team.
The top three scorers for the Mustangs this season is:
■ Legacy Miller – 11.6 points
■ Kahlil Jordan – 11.4 points
■ Kevin Verpaele – 9.3 points
Sebastian River, like Merritt Island, has three losses decided by six points or less, which would put them over .500 in the record books. They started out 3-1 on the season and have ridden the loss to win wave all season long.
However, they were 2-1 in their last three games, as was Merritt Island. They beat Holy Cross Lutheran 62-45 and Brevard Christian 47-40, and lost to Legacy 59-48.
Sebastian River has four games remaining after defeating Merritt Island last night. They improved to 8-12 on the season and will look to finish with a .500 record.
The top three scorers for the Sharks are:
■ Dontay Williams – 11.8 points
■ Samuel Sammartano – 9.0 points
■ Tirell Baskin – 8.9 points

It was the Tirell Baskin show for the Sharks; his tenacious defense and aggressive offense led the way for Sebastian River in their 56-45 win over Merritt Island.
Baskin finished with 14 points, five blocks, and five steals in the victory.
Early in the game, these two teams were neck and neck. Merritt Island seemed to have an answer for every shot that Sebastian River converted.
However, in the last couple of minutes of the half, Sebastian River turned their defense into offense, going on a 7-0 run to close the half. That would ultimately give the Sharks the momentum they were looking for all night, as that run before that half would ignite their team, and they never surrendered the lead again, finishing this one off 56-45.
